Listening to Long Messages (Section D)
Handle the long interview in TEF Compréhension Orale: preview questions, take fast notes, and track who thinks what.
Introduction
The last part of the listening test is a long recording — a radio interview or a discussion between two or three people — followed by several questions. It is played once, and you never see a transcript. The challenge is not vocabulary; it is holding information in memory and telling the speakers' opinions apart. This lesson gives you a note system and a way to track viewpoints.
Before the Audio: Read All the Questions
You usually get a few seconds before the recording. Use them to read every question and every option. They reveal the topic, the structure, and what to listen for. Underline the question word in each one.
» — Question: "What is the interviewed woman's job?"
» — Question: "According to the man, what is the main advantage?"
» — Question: "On what point do the two guests agree?" (sur kel pwan lay duh an-vee-tay son-teel da-kor)
A Fast Note System
Do not write sentences. Use a two-column layout — one per speaker — and jot symbols and keywords only. You are recording enough to answer, not transcribing.
- F: prof / + horaires flexibles / − trop de préparation — W: teacher / + flexible hours / − too much prep
- H: ingénieur / d'accord sur salaire / ≠ sur télétravail — M: engineer / agrees on salary / disagrees on telework
- chiffres : 3 ans, 40 %, 2015 — numbers: 3 years, 40%, 2015
Tracking Who Thinks What
Many wrong answers are true statements attributed to the wrong speaker. Listen for the markers that signal whose opinion is coming and whether views align or clash.
- Personnellement, je trouve que… / De mon côté, … — Personally, I find that… / For my part, … (pair-so-nel-mahn / duh mon ko-tay)
- Je vous rejoins sur ce point. / Là-dessus, nous sommes d'accord. — I agree with you on that. / On that, we agree. (zhuh voo ruh-zhwan sur suh pwan)
- Je ne partage pas cet avis. / Je vois les choses autrement. — I don't share that view. / I see things differently. (zhuh nuh par-tazh pa set a-vee)
- En réalité, … / En fait, … — Actually, … / In fact, … (an ray-a-lee-tay / an fet)
Worked Mini-Interview
Read this short transcript once, then look at how the notes and answers come out. « — Camille, vous êtes libraire depuis dix ans. Le numérique a-t-il changé votre métier ? — Beaucoup, oui.
Practice: Long-Message Decisions
Use the transcript above and the strategies to answer.
Review
You now have a method for the long-message part. **What you learned:** ✓ Read every question and option before the audio; underline the question word ✓ Two-column notes, one per speaker — symbols and keywords, never sentences ✓ Write numbers and dates the instant you hear them ✓ Attribute opinions: "personnellement", "de mon côté" = that speaker's view ✓ Agreement ("je vous rejoins") vs disagreement ("je vois les choses autrement") ✓ "En réalité / en fait" = a correction coming, often a question target ✓ Miss a line? Move on — protect the next answer **Practice tip:** Listen to one RFI or France Inter interview per day. Pause after two minutes and reconstruct each speaker's position from memory. Then listen again with the two-column note system.
